Meet Dominick Montalto

Let me give you some details on who I am so that you know you’ve come to the right place for all your writing, editing, tutoring, and other education needs.

I’ve been a writer since winter 1992 when I was fourteen, and the genres I work in are poetry and essays, personal and academic/scholarly. In the last two years I have been increasingly drawn to memoir writing in my work as an editor, hence why the first course I’m offering is in this genre. I have been blogging at www.apoetsperspective.com for the last decade.

I am currently a full-time editor and proofreader for two major publishing houses, Simon & Schuster and Little, Brown, since 2009 and 2013, respectively. I work mainly on nonfiction, but also memoir and fiction, and occasionally poetry and cookbooks.

From 2002 through 2007 I worked as an adjunct English professor of composition and global literature at St. John‘s University, where I designed curriculums that utilized philosophical texts for the basis of composition pieces and taught the literature course through a philosophical lens in the examination of novels and poetry. Before this I was an ESL tutor at Queensborough Community College from 2000 to 2002.

My educational background includes a certificate in editing and a certificate in digital publishing from NYU’s School of Professional Studies, a master’s degree in English from Queens College (where I specialized in British Romanticism and wrote my thesis on the art and poetry of William Blake), and a bachelor’s degree in English, with minors in art history and philosophy, from Adelphi University.

Despite the different professional avenues I have gone down (including a stint in retail), I have always been called to educate, first learning this when I was eight. And writing has been my vocation, a means of educating others (through the prose) and discovering myself (primarily through the poetry).

My literary specialization is in British and American Gothic and Romantic fiction and poetry, late nineteenth-century British and French Aesthetic and Decadent fiction and poetry, and the modern novel.

My philosophical sphere of knowledge and interest is Greek and Eastern philosophy (particularly Hinduism and Buddhism) and existentialism. I also have a background in Western religion and mysticism.
